Henry Martin (July 4, 1826 - October 6, 1915) was born at Monticello and was claimed in ownership by the Jefferson family before being trafficked and sold to be claimed in ownership by the Carr family at Bentivar. Beginning in 1846 or 1847, Martin was contracted to labor in different capacities on Grounds at the University of Virginia. By 1868, he was employed by the University as the head janitor and bell ringer, a post he was well-known for and held through 1910. He is buried at the Daughters of Zion Cemetery in Charlottesville, Virginia.
