Description
John Hartwell Cocke (September 19, 1780 - June 24, 1866) was a white enslaver who was heavily involved in the University of Virginia's construction and early development and sat on its Board of Visitors from 1819-1856. He was an evangelical Christian and, despite being an enslaver, believed that slavery was against God's will. He supported the back-to-Africa movement over emancipation. Regardless of his religious beliefs, Cocke enslaved at least one hundred and thirty-five people in his lifetime in both Virginia (Bremo Plantation) and Alabama (Hopewell Plantation).
