Description
Socrates Maupin (November 12, 1808 - October 19, 1871) was a white enslaver, University of Virginia Professor of Chemistry (1853-1870), and Chairman of the Faculty (1854-1870). According to the 1860 U.S. Census Schedule of Slave Inhabitants of Albemarle County's St. Anne's Parish, Maupin enslaved at least eleven people. He lived in Pavilion VIII while working at the University. In 1871, he fell from a runaway carriage and sustained a head injury that proved fatal. He is buried on Grounds in the University Cemetery.
