Description
John A. G. Davis (March 5, 1802 - November 11, 1840) was a white enslaver and Professor of Law at the University of Virginia. He served as the Chairman of the Faculty from 1835-1837, and again from 1839-1840. Davis was married to Mary Jane Terrell, Thomas Jefferson's grandniece, and was the father of John Staige Davis. On November 12, 1840, he was shot in the abdomen in front of his home, Pavilion X, by University of Virginia student Joseph Green Semmes. Davis died two days later and is buried in the University of Virginia Cemetery.
