Description
An unidentified child (referred to as a "small negro girl") was violently assaulted and raped by three University of Virginia students George H. Hardy, Armistead C. Eliason, and James E. Montandon in a field near the boarding houses of Col. Michael Johnson and Mr. Leake. This violent crime was witnessed and stopped by several University of Virginia students, including Daniel B. Conrad, John B. Eastham, and Richard Venable Gaines. The perpetrators, Hardy, Eliason, and Montandon fled the scene and escaped from "the Civil Authority." They were expelled by the University. This event was recorded in Faculty Minutes, April 24, 1850.
