Description: Charles Rufus Ayres (December 23, 1826 - November 11, 1859) was a white enslaver who attended the University of Virginia from 1847-1849. He was educated as a lawyer but did not practice, and instead farmed. He was shot and killed in a street fight in Rectortown, VA on November 11, 1859. In his will, Ayres freed several of the people he claimed in ownership and directed that the children of Jane Payne, Mary Fletcher, and Gleaves receive $100 annuities to support and educate them. He may have been the father of these women's children.
