Description
Gleaves was a woman who was claimed in ownership by white enslaver Charles Rufus Ayres. In his will, Ayres freed Gleaves and directed that her children receive $100 annuities to support and educate them. Along with two other freedwomen, Gleaves petitioned the Virginia General Assembly to relinquish her freedom and re-enslave herself.
