During the Union Army's occupation of Charlottesville, Burkley Bullock stole his white enslaver Socrates Maupin's horse, gathered his family, and rode off seeking freedom. This event is recorded in a letter written by an unidentified daughter of John B. Minor addressed to an unidentified aunt, March 8, 1865, in the Minor and Wilson Family Papers.
