Description
Thrimston Hern (circa 1799 - after 1831) was born to parents David and Isabel Hern at Monticello and was claimed in ownership by white enslaver Thomas Jefferson. Hern was a skilled woodworker and, beginning in 1820, was trained in stone cutting by John Gorman. In 1829, Hern was trafficked and sold for $600 and claimed in ownership by white enslaver Arthur S. Brockenbrough. Hern cut the stone for the steps of the Rotunda and is believed to have laid the cornerstone of the University.
